Why Sound Healing Is Good For Emotional Health
Sound has a profound effect on how we feel, our mood, our sense of motivation and inspiration, and our energy. Imagine yourself taking a walk outdoors and suddenly hearing the sound of a nearby train, gliding over the tracks at high speed. Then as you continue your walk, you hear a high-pitch, almost musical sound and you look above and see two birds playfully flying from one tree to the next. Think of your reaction to the first sound and then to the next sound. How do you physically react and how do you feel emotionally? What thoughts go through your mind as you experience each sound?
How it serves us
Sound serves to warn us of danger, comfort us if we are stressed, entertain us when we are happy, and soothe us if we are in need of relaxation. We can select sound to match our current emotional state just the same as we can choose sound to incite an opposite mood or feeling. Sound can bring a smile to our face or tears down our cheeks. Sound can trigger memories from long ago and can aid in creating new memories, relationships, and experiences.
Functions of Sound
The many functions of sound make sound healing a powerful and influential tool that provides numerous emotional and psychological benefits and can aid in alleviating a variety of mental health problems and symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, phobias, inattention, anger, panic attacks, fears, among other issues.
Our natural state of resonance
The concept behind sound healing is that sound, or resonance, is the frequency by which an object vibrates. The human body has a unique resonance and each of us has our own, personal resonance. Mental health problems or disorders occur when the body’s innate resonance is out of tune and this disequilibrium can result from life experiences, stressors, change, trauma, or other factors that create an imbalance in the body. Sound healing helps the body to return to its natural resonance state.
The idea of sound having healing properties is often met with much disbelief, but how can we deny the power of sound if sound is the very catalyst of much of the feelings that we experience every day? In fact, sound is likely the one form of therapy that has been utilized (and often overlooked) among people of all ages, races, cultures, religions and ethnic groups for centuries. This sound is in the form of music. Music has been used to instigate various emotions with different genres serving different therapeutic purposes.
In summary...
In order to heal and recover from emotional symptoms and concerns, we must allow our body to absorb sound and rhythm, to gain balance from resonance, and to enjoy the peace and comfort of returning to a state of clarity and connection with the self.
